In the West of Kazakhstan, where the Ural River finds the Caspian Sea, the transcontinental city Atyrau and oil capital of Kazakhstan is located. In 2006 its airports new Terminal building was completed.
In that year the construction of a new state-of-the-art runway began. Deerns was responsible for the design of the ICAO CAT II Airfield Ground Lighting systems. Deerns also provided on-site training to contractors for an optimal runway-system installation and testing and commissioning of all new systems were performed by an on-site Deerns engineer. Due to the extreme climate the city is subjected to, extra attention was paid to the testing all the temperature sensitive installations. Deerns finalized the new airfield systems design with airports special systems on airside and the control tower systems design.
